Village of Wellesley
Wherever one starts, a visit
to Wellesley is worthwhile. Noted for the Wellesley Apple Butter and Cheese
Festival (on the last Saturday in September) the village has much to offer.
It is a gardener's delight, and while the pond area is a focal point, many
residents have private gardens that are the envy of many horticulturalists.
The Pond area is a good spot for a picnic.
Downtown Wellesley appears much as it did 100 years ago.
The
grocery store on the corner of Nafziger Rd. and Queen's Bush Rd. has been in
operation for almost 150 years. The Wellesley Inn, once the Royal Hotel,
dates back to 1857. A Walking Tour of Wellesley is available from the Township office in
Crosshill.
The Trail continues east from Wellesley, on Gerber Road, revealing
well kept farms of many descendants of Amish settlers from Alsace-Lorraine. Some names
like Gerber, Zehr and Jantzi remain on what was the Amish Line. There are many Georgian
style homes and some show remnants of the Deitsch culture where the front walls under the
verandahs have been plastered. Past the "bear" (a local landmark), the Trail comes
to a stop and turns left on Moser-Young Road.
